UNITED STEELWORKERS LOCAL UNION 1899 - GRANITE CITY, IL |
|
![]() ![]() USW District 7 Members in Solidarity March With Los Mineros/Steelworkers and Miners in MexicoOn April 20, several members of USW District 7, Sub-2 participated in showing support for Los Mineros workers as we marched and held a memorial on the 4th anniversary of the death of two workers from the Sicarsta/Arcelor Mittal steel mill in Larzaro Cardenas, Michocan Mexico. Few would argue that the oprression being inflicted by the Mexican government, as well as the multin-national corporations that operate the Mexican industries, have created an environment for workers that is a mirror image of the battles U.S. workers fought during the industrial revolution. If we as a country, and as an organization, hope to raise Mexican workers standard of living to anything close to ours, as the NAFTA compact was naively designed, we must recognize the need to expand these global workers alliances. _____________________________________________________________If you are interested in Granite City Steel history, specifically old mill photos be sure to drop in Room 201 at the Historic Labor Temple after the next union meeting for refreshments and take a look at our latest posters. The Blooming Mill, #1 Open Hearth among other black and white photos depicting GCS of old are mounted on the walls. As time and energy permits, more representations of our forebearers past will be framed in posters along the 2nd floor hallway walls.
